Your lawn needs water. While a good, soaking rainstorm is the best way for your lawn to get the moisture it needs, sometimes you just aren’t able to wait for the rain. During extended periods of dry weather or drought, you will be forced to turn on the sprinkler system in order to give your lawn the water it needs. We all know that too little water can lead to an unhealthy lawn, however too much water can lead to its own set of problems and complications. It is important to understand how to correctly water your lawn this summer.
When Do You Water?
Avoid watering your lawn during the hottest part of the day. From 11am-3pm, too much water can be lost due to evaporation or wind. It is always best to water your lawn in the early morning. Between 6 and 10am, there is less wind and less heat so you water won’t evaporate before it has a chance to soak into your lawn. It also allows your lawn a full day to dry.
How Much Do You Water?
As we mentioned in our previous blog, your lawn needs about 1”-1 ½” of water per week. Instead of watering a little bit every day, it is best to apply about ½” of water about 2-3 times a week. In order to find out how long it takes to apply that much water, you can set out cans or buckets in your lawn and time how long it takes to fill them up with ½” of water. Once you have that information, you can set your sprinklers up on a timer.
What Happens If I Overwater?
Over watering your lawn can lead to just as many problems as under watering it. In fact, over watering your lawn can lead to the development of disease, as well as mildew and fungus.
